My day trip was on the Great Ocean Road, a long and winding 200km
stretch of road to Melbourne's west. This road has beautiful views it seem
at almost every turn. It was built as a make work project for the troops
returning to Australia after the first world war. The road runs along three
different coasts. The first is the surf coast, which travels through some of
the finest surf spots in the world including the infamous Point Break. All
along this coast are tiny resort villages like Torquay, Apollo Bay and
Lorne. The second coast that is the Ottway coast, and the area along this
coast is mountainous. We were able to stop and see some Koalas in the wild
along the way, something the zookeeper in Sydney told me would be very hard
to do. The third coast is aptly named the shipwreck cast, as it is rocky and
quite treacherous. We heard stories of many shipwrecks that had happened here
over the years. This coast is also home to the famous rock formations known
as the Twelve Apostles, which are limestone pillars extending in to the
ocean away from the coast. Erosion over the years has left only seven
standing, but they've kept the catchy name. Another rock formation is called the London Bridge.
The only downside to the tour was that it arrives back in Melbourne late, around 9:30pm. Many people told me they took one of the two day tours from Melbourne to Adelaide and really enjoyed it.
