From Queenstown, I drove on to Strahan
(pronounced STRAWN) and Tasmania's wild west coast. The town is picturesquely
located on Macquarie Harbour, which has access the the Southern Ocean via a 2km
wide opening. This area was the last of Tasmania to be settled because the
harbour was so difficult to access. The rock cliff which make up the entrance to
the harbor have claimed over 150 ships and 1,000 lives in the days before power
guided boats. From Strahan, I took a river cruise of the Gordon River, Part of
the previously mentioned World Heritage area. It is dense rainforest and is home
to many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. The cruise also
visited Sarah Island, a penal settlement which predated Port Arthur and was
considered to be equally as inhumane. Information on the cruise that I took is
available at the company's web site at www.worldheritagecruises.com.au.
