New Orleans, LA to Alexandria, LA (306 miles)

I got up early to be in line for the French Quarter Walking Tour offered by the Visitor's Center for the Jean Lafitte NHP. The tour spent as much time on the banks of the Mississippi as it did in the French Quarter, but it was pretty good. I spent some more time walking around the French Quarter, then decided I had enough of New Orleans and headed southwest. My first stop was at the Barataria Reserve, a series of hiking trails through the bayou. I had see better swamps at Congaree NP in January, so I did not spend much time here.

I drove through Thibodaux, to the Acadian Wetlands Cultural Center, and excellent museum run by the NPS in this tidy town, home to Nicholls St. University.

I arrived too late in Lafayette to do more than look around the Acadian Cultural Center, which covered much of the same material as the Thibodaux site, and was equally excellent. Vermillionville, a living history museum located next door, receives rave reviews, but was only open 10am-330pm, so I was unable to visit.

I drove on to Alexandria, where I stayed at a pretty nice Motel 6. I published this page using a signal I found in a parking lot of a closed Dry Cleaner. I assume it wasn't coming from there, but I couldn't pinpoint it.
