Fort Union National Monument

Fort Union National Monument is the ruins of the third fort built on the same site. The first was built to defend citizens on the newly acquired territory of New Mexico from Indian raids. The second fort was being built to repel an expected Confederate attack during the Civil War, an attack that never came, as Union troops repelled the attack further south. The third fort was built in between 1863 and 1869, and was used for more supply than military purposes until the 1890s, when it was abandoned. Most of the building are in ruin, but interpretive information posted all over on small stand help during the walk. The Hospital and Territorial Prison are two of the better preserved buildings.
