Montezuma Castle National Monument is located about 50 miles south of Flagstaff. The ancient Sinaguan dwelling, built dramatically 100 feet up in a recess in a cliff, once was five stories and contained more than 20 rooms. The name is misleading- Montezuma never lived here and it isn't a castle. Also included in the monument is the natural sinkhole, called Montezuma Well, some 11 miles away from the castle. This limestone sink was formed by the collapse of an underground cave. It has provided a reliable source of water for thousands of years.
