Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park may be desert now, but 225 million years ago, this land was a vast forest. Over that long period of time, the trees fell and the wood inside was replaced by silica, which caused the trees to turn to stone. Now this park protects these prehistoric remnants, as well as an exceptionally  scenic area known as the Painted Desert. A 28.5 mile driving tour leads to short hiking trails into the Petrified Forest Areas, as well as Indian Ruins and the Painted Desert.
